The issue

Growing up in Australia, I have always cherished our democratic values and the freedom of expression that comes with them. However, in recent times, I have become increasingly concerned about the pervasive influence of misinformation and disinformation that threatens the integrity of our democracy.

Political interference, often fueled by entities such as the Atlas Network from the USA and Advance in Australia, has the potential to distort public opinion and erode trust in our political system. These organizations leverage strategic narratives and manipulative content to sway public discourse, often away from the facts. According to the Australian Electoral Commission, interference in political processes is a concern with tangible impacts, causing considerable unease among citizens who value transparency and truth.

To safeguard our democracy, it is imperative that we expedite reforms in Australian federal law that address these issues directly. This includes bolstering regulations around foreign interference and misinformation, enhancing transparency in political advertising, and increasing accountability for those disseminating false information.

Several steps can be taken to mitigate these threats. Firstly, we propose stricter guidelines for online advertising to ensure all political content is clearly labelled and traceable to its source. Secondly, implementing educational programs aimed at improving media literacy across the nation will empower citizens to better discern reliable information from disinformation. Additionally, establishing an independent body to oversee these reforms could provide unbiased, dedicated oversight to uphold these standards.

Countries like Finland have instituted successful programs to combat misinformation with significant results, leading to a more informed populace. We have a unique opportunity to learn from these examples and safeguard our democratic institutions from erosion.

Join me in urging the Australian government to act swiftly and decisively. It is only through collective action that we can ensure our political system remains free from undue influence and centered on truth. Protecting our democracy is everyone's responsibility—sign this petition to call for immediate legal reforms in Australia.
