The Issue

Folks, it's time to address a crucial issue in our community. As it stands, the Tri-State Transit Authority's services fall short by neglecting transportation on Sundays and holidays. This leaves many of our neighbors without access to essential services such as grocery shopping and church attendance. But this isn't just an inconvenience – it's a necessity for the 30% of public transportation users who don't own a private vehicle. By extending the transit service to Sundays and holidays, we can provide our community members with the freedom to plan their essential activities without the restriction of inadequate public transportation.

Let's not forget that 8-9% of households in the United States do not own a car. It's time we extend these services and meet the needs of our community more comprehensively. We propose leaving this as an optional opportunity for bus operators who want to work overtime, giving them the freedom of choice and a way to expand their income.

Public transit should be active 7 days a week and on most holidays, just like in major cities like Sacramento, California. Huntington, West Virginia may have been designed around the automobile, but it's time to prioritize the needs of all community members, including those who rely on public transportation.

I have also learned that 7 years ago the so-called "Tri-State" Transit Authority cut service to Ohio and Kentucky. I believe this may be a budget issue.

Public transportation lowers carbon emissions, results in drivers and cyclists spending less time in traffic, provides people with cheaper alternatives and a freedom of choice, and expands economic development by allowing people to reach shopping centers and jobs.
