Expand the TOR Bus Routes

The Issue

Greetings, Dear Monsey Residents,

We are keenly aware of the significant growth Monsey has experienced, expanding our town boundaries considerably. As Rockland Residents, we heavily rely on external transportation for our daily commutes. Like many others, we face the ongoing challenge of commuting due to the absence of nearby bus routes. Until now, our only option was to take a taxi daily to the town center, incurring costs ranging from $8 to $12 per trip. This not only places a financial burden on individuals but also restricts our ability to move freely within our own town. Unfortunately, taxi services have proven to be unreliable and unsafe. Consequently, we are seeking an alternative solution.

While the Tor bus service is available, it falls short of covering our entire residential area. Even more frustrating, the bus routes have remained unchanged for the past 15 years. Many neighborhoods are overlooked, such as Suffern, Montebello, New Hempstead, New City, Voila/Union area, Ridge/Twin area, Airmont, Chestnut Ridge, and more.. Although buses may pass through some of these areas, the routes are not interconnected, and they do not conveniently transport us to the town center, situated on Main Street/Route 59. Furthermore, the bus schedules lack consistency and punctuality, and there is a lack of real-time tracking.

According to data from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), using public transportation can save individuals up to $10,000 annually compared to owning and maintaining a personal vehicle. Moreover, expanding bus routes can lead to increased economic activity by connecting people with local businesses and services, thereby reducing traffic congestion that plagues our town & minimizing pollution

Hence, we respectfully call upon the Transport of Rockland (TOR) authorities and local government officials in Rockland County to take the following actions:

1. Ensure that all routes, whether originating from Airmont or New Hempstead, efficiently connect us to the town’s center.

2. We also kindly request the installation of real-time tracking systems on all buses to reduce waiting times and enhance convenience.

3. Expand TOR bus routes to comprehensively cover all the new areas surrounding our town, including those mentioned above and any other missed areas, as well as interconnecting the routes to connect us to any area.

It is time for our community to unite and advocate for an inclusive public transportation system that serves the needs of all residents.

Please add your signature to this petition if you support equal access to public transportation for all Rockland County residents.

We encourage you to share this message with as many individuals as possible. Thank you for your invaluable support!
