The Issue

I was raised within the comforting confines of the Gainesville skatepark. This place, where I watched countless individuals come and go, where I spent an immeasurable amount of time, feels forgotten and overlooked. Throughout my time here, I have grown to want nothing more than for others to experience the joy of skateboarding and the camaraderie that comes with it, rather than falling into damaging habits. Our park shouldn't be just a memory; it should be a lively hub that continues to nurture youthful dreams and foster healthy community interaction.

Statistics show that increased recreational spaces help reduce crime and mischief. In a report by the National Recreation and Park Association, communities with accessible recreational facilities saw a decrease in crime rates, especially among young people (NRPA, 2017). Expanding Gainesville Skatepark not only caters to the sporting passion of our youth but also provides a safer, more engaging environment for them.

We aren’t asking for a massive overhaul, just a bit of a facelift – enough to bring a new spark to our beloved park. Let’s ensure that the high-level skating and sense of community fostered here are not just a point in history but a persistent feature deserving attention.

Lend your voice to this cause. Help us revive a cherished community hub. Sign the petition. Let's expand the Gainesville Skatepark.

Hello Petition Supporters, Our entire city is in need of over $700 million in infrastructure needs. With that said we are currently in the middle of developing a new comprehensive plan for the city of Gainesville. We have had one public event and will be having two more in the future. Part of this plan is a parks and trails plan. While we value any feedback, our comprehensive plan is a great place to have your civic leaders hear your voice. I do appreciate the signatures on the petition. Sincerely, Tommy Moore Mayor of Gainesville
