Expand Tamworth Skatepark For More Opportunities!

The Issue

As a passionate skateboarder and resident of Tamworth, England, I am writing this petition to address the urgent need for expanding our local skatepark. The current skatepark is not meeting the demands of our growing community and fails to provide sufficient space for skaters of all ages and skill levels.

Personal Story:
I have been an avid skater for many years now, and I have seen first-hand how the popularity of skateboarding has soared in our town. The existing skatepark, while appreciated by many, simply cannot accommodate the increasing number of skaters who flock to it every day. This leads to overcrowding, limited practice time, and even safety concerns.

Moreover, there is a significant wasted area adjacent to the current skatepark that serves no purpose aside from being a congregational spot. By utilizing this unused space effectively, we can create an expanded skatepark that will cater to the needs of all skaters in Tamworth.

Reasons for Expansion:

1. Increased Demand: Skateboarding has gained immense popularity since its inclusion in the 2020 Olympics. With more people taking up this exhilarating sport locally, it is crucial that we provide adequate facilities to nurture their talent and passion. For example, many kids growing up in this era will see these events such as the Olympics and XGames online and they will want to try and learn skateboarding/BMX or scooter because they think it is interesting because they have a genuine passion for it. Allowing this would allow them to persue their passion even moreso so they do not have to travel to many neighbouring skateparks, or commonly driving 2+ hours away to go to an indoor skatepark to where they can try something for a few hours then return, but having these facilities at the local skatepark would increase popularity immensely for the area but also possibly allow someone to achieve their dream in the industry, if someone were to theoretically go to the Olympics/XGames or another global event where everybody gets together to compete, that person would be proud to say they grew up at this skatepark. Furthermore increasing popularity for the town and its facilities.

2. Safety Concerns: Overcrowding at our current skatepark poses serious safety risks as skaters have limited space to perform tricks safely without colliding with others or nearby obstacles.

3. Inclusivity: An expanded skatepark would allow us to incorporate features suitable for various skill levels – from beginners honing their skills on smaller ramps to advanced riders seeking challenging obstacles – ensuring everyone feels welcome and encouraged within our community.
A tightknit community is very important within a skatepark environment, as it allows everybody to push each other to try new things and try and improve. Alongside this, having a wide range of ages use this park allows for unexpected friendships to occur, for example, a well renowned skater being friends and attempting to teach someone who is relatively new to skating for example. This friendships are vital because it allows for opportunities later in life within the sport.

4. Economic Benefits: A well-designed and expanded skatepark would attract visitors from neighbouring towns or cities who are eager to explore new skating opportunities. This increased footfall could boost local businesses such as cafes or shops near the skatepark, contributing to the economic growth of Tamworth.
With this, the fair that is in the castle grounds Numerous times a year will generate a very large profit for the council, allocating some of this funding to the skatepark would be perfect because it will not only improve the skatepark, but also many people whom visit the fair bring their kids alongside with them from neighbouring towns, allowing them to use all of these facilities is very good for the economics of the town, allowing for everybody to make a profit from this investment in the long-term.

5: Many years ago there used to be annual events at this skatepark, since Covid these events have ceased to exist because of the local popularity decreasing, but bringing this expansion to the skatepark would allow the popularity to grow exponentially because many professional level skaters/scooters/BMX used this area when growing up, allowing them to get to the level they are at now.

6. Health and Well-being: Skateboarding is not just a sport; it is an excellent form of exercise that promotes physical fitness, coordination, and mental well-being. By expanding our skatepark, we can encourage more people to engage in this healthy activity and improve their overall quality of life.
Another health and safety risk that comes from this unused area is that people all too often play football there as they use the fence as a guideline for the football, this causes health and safety risks as the football often collides with users of the skatepark causing injuries, most commonly from this. Head injuries, so having this new space would not allow anybody to play football in that area as there would be new obstacles there allowing people to skate this currently unused area.
Another health and safety risk for this skatepark is that parents all too often sit on the obstacles within the skatepark, most commonly the ledges, even if people spray paint onto them "do not sit" parents still sit on them. What does this issue pose? This is an issue because there are many skaters who would like to use that obstacle but cannot as there are parents sitting there, even if they are asked respectfully to move, more parents will go and sit there moments later. Alongside this, these parents are often not paying attention, so for example a common practise of the skatepark is for a board to go flying to where it will launch in one direction, often colliding with someone due to the overcrowding issue to where the health and safety risk comes in once more.

Conclusion:

It is evident that an expanded Tamworth skatepark would greatly benefit our community by providing more opportunities for skaters of all ages and skill levels. By utilizing the currently wasted area adjacent to the existing park, we can create a safe and inclusive space where individuals can pursue their passion for skateboarding without limitations.

I urge you to support this petition so that together we can make a positive change in our town. Let's expand Tamworth skatepark and unlock its full potential!

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

The Skaters of Tamworth.
