Expand SNAP eligibility and benefits for low-income families in Georgia

The Issue

I've seen firsthand how the struggles of low-income families can be exacerbated by limited access to essential resources. Living in Georgia, I've watched as friends and neighbors, hardworking individuals who strive daily to provide for their families, still find themselves unable to put enough food on the table. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known in Georgia as the Food Stamp program, should serve as a safety net for these families, yet many are unable to benefit due to stringent eligibility requirements and insufficient benefits.

Currently, the SNAP program in Georgia falls short of meeting the needs of these families. According to data from the USDA, Georgia ranks among the states with the highest levels of food insecurity. In 2020, nearly 12% of households in Georgia were food insecure, meaning they had limited or uncertain access to adequate food. Despite these alarming statistics, the eligibility for SNAP remains restrictive, leaving many families without the support they desperately need.

Expanding SNAP eligibility and increasing benefits would have a profound impact on these families. Children would attend school with full stomachs, the elderly wouldn't have to choose between buying groceries and medications, and parents could focus more on work and less on whether there will be dinner on the table tonight. According to a study by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, expanding SNAP eligibility could reduce food insecurity rates substantially, leading to better health outcomes and improved academic performance among children.

Moreover, for every dollar spent on SNAP benefits, there is a return of $1.50-$1.80 in economic activity; expanding this program would not only support families but also bolster Georgia's economy. Local businesses would see more customers and farmers would have more stable markets for their produce.

I urge Georgia's leaders to recognize the urgent need to expand SNAP eligibility criteria and benefits. Let's ensure that no family has to worry about where their next meal is coming from. By doing so, we can help build a healthier and more prosperous Georgia for all. Please sign this petition to make our voices heard and bring about much-needed change.
