We, the undersigned residents of Sanger Elementary School area neighborhoods, support the expansion of Sanger to serve students in 6-8th grade with dual language and general education programs.
The Issue
A number of Sanger parents and DISD officials are exploring a proposal to expand Sanger into a PreK-8th grade campus. Considering the significant progress our school has made over the past 3 years, we believe Sanger is well-positioned for this opportunity.
Advantages for expanding Sanger to serve students in 6-8th grades:
· 6-8th grade students would have their own building wing on a campus that they already know and love.
· Students in the dual language program can continue their study through 8th grade.
· General education classes also would be offered, so many students who now leave Sanger in 3rd and 4th grades could stay, knowing they have a middle school option that works for them.
· We can advocate for AP classes to be offered on our campus as a complement to the dual language program.
· DISD is reviewing ways to offer school choice at Hill and Gaston, and this will give our parents another choice.
· Existing middle schools in our area are close to or at capacity, and Sanger could ease overcrowding.
· Parents with children in elementary and middle grades will be able to devote their full time and attention to one school. When parents are involved in a school, students are more successful.
· Large middle schools have not fulfilled the goal of providing "tweens" the support they need, and many school districts now are bringing 6-8th grades back into the elementary level.
· PreK-8 schools often have better attendance rates than traditional middle schools.
