Expand Free Menstrual Product Dispensers in Arcadia's Public Restrooms

The Issue

Period poverty began not by choice, but due to circumstances. The phenomenon is real, it’s pressing, and it affects millions of people across the globe. Nearly two-thirds of low-income menstruating individuals are unable to afford tampons or pads in the US. They are often compelled to choose between buying food and basic necessities or period products.

Menstrual products, like pads and tampons, are essential hygiene items, yet they are often treated as luxury goods rather than necessities. Just as toilet paper is freely available in public restrooms, menstrual products should be as well. People do not have a choice when it comes to menstruation—it is a natural biological function, much like the need to use the restroom. Expecting individuals to always carry their own menstrual supplies places an unfair burden on them, particularly in emergency situations when their period starts unexpectedly.

In light of this, we call upon the local authorities in Arcadia to expand the services of free menstrual product dispensers in public washrooms. Not only is ensuring access to these essential hygiene products a demonstration of dignity and respect, it also prevents absenteeism such as in schools or workplaces - essentially any environment where period products may not be readily available.

By providing free menstrual products in all public washrooms across Arcadia, we can ensure that no one has to decide between their next meal and dealing with their period. It's high time we prioritise menstrual equity and end the silence around period poverty. Add your voice to this important issue - sign the petition.
