Expand Ed Miliband's Renters Rights Bill to Include Council and Social Accommodation

The Issue

I have personally grappled with the current standards of council and social housing in the UK. While Ed Miliband's Renters Rights Bill is a step forwards in securing minimal living standards for renters in private landlord properties, a significant percentage of the country's accommodation goes overlooked: council and social housing. I believe wholeheartedly that the aspiration for all properties to meet a minimum EPC C rating should not merely apply to private rentals, but should extend across all forms of housing from all landlords including social and council housing. In addition if an aim is to have a tangible, positive impact on our environment, no housing should be excluded from these standards.

Right now, 17% of local authority dwellings in England fail to meet the Decent Homes Standard, making this a pressing issue that needs to be addressed promptly (source: The English Housing Survey, 2019). By demanding this simple amendment to the Renters Rights Bill - to include the requirement that all council and social housing must meet at least the EPC C standard by 2030 - we are not only ensuring improved living conditions for all inhabitants but are also contributing to the UK's wider commitment to environmental sustainability.

Through this petition, we're bringing a voice to the overlooked renters in council and social housing. The expansion of the Renters Rights Bill is not only a necessity but a demand for equality. Let's level up the housing field. Sign this petition to demand an amendment to Ed Miliband's Renters Rights Bill that includes council and social housing in its EPC C standard requirements by 2030.
