As a passionate animal lover living in Shawnee County, KS, I am deeply concerned about the lack of services provided to animals in need within our community. Our county has only one animal control officer who works from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Outside these hours and during weekends, no additional services are available for animals in distress.

Moreover, local law enforcement officers from both the police department and the Sheriff's office do not enforce animal neglect and cruelty cases outside working hours. This lack of enforcement allows dogs to roam freely without regard for local laws or their safety.

This situation is unacceptable. Animals are sentient beings deserving of care and protection at all times - not just during business hours. It is crucial that we hold irresponsible pet owners accountable for their actions to prevent further suffering or death among our four-legged citizens.

We call on Shawnee County officials to expand animal services by hiring more animal control officers who can work beyond regular office hours. We also urge the Topeka Police Department (TPD) and The Shawnee County Sheriff's Department to enforce existing laws against animal neglect and cruelty at all times.
