Expand and Improve the Wahiawa Skatepark for Our Youth
The Issue
UPDATE 06/04/2024
Wahiawa Skatepark Improvement
Met with Parks and Rec today here is an email I responded with, mahalo @808skate and @ez_skateshop for joining
It was great meeting with you today, mahalo nui for all of your time. I put together a potential footprint map for this now Wahiawa Skatepark improvement project.
Here is the Google Earth project link to see actual square footage
https://earth.google.com/earth/d/1bWIDgC0L3qtZzbnSNJ432oa6B9seTwea
In the screenshot you can see at the top, the old Skatepark area (discussed to be re-purposed as a new Pickleball Court).
To the bottom left is the new area for the Volleyball court to be moved and the bottom right the actual footprint of the new Wahiawa Skatepark. The existing picnic tables and benches can be moved to the other side of the sidewalk or even by the new Volleyball court area.
We also talked about designing the skatepark in a way that will be safe for adjacent Volleyball and Basketball courts, keeping in mind liability and safety for all. Having this type of design will not need an enclosed fence, having a more open, welcoming feeling.
We also discussed using the existing light posts and possible splitters to make use of existing infrastructure to save on budget.

UPDATE 04/15/2024
The Mayorʻs Town Hall was a great success in gaining support from the community and City and State officials, I am meeting with his Chief of Staff tomorrow at the skatepark to get a handle on location and space of this project, mahalo nui to all that showed up physically, signed the petition or those who support positive outdoor outlets for all.
Come support at the Mayor Town Hall, April 11th, 7pm at Wahiawa Elementary.
Aloha mai kakou! I remember growing up in Wahiawa, dreaming of becoming a sponsored skateboarder. However, our local skatepark was too small to practice effectively, forcing me to travel far and wide just to pursue my passion. Now that skateboarding is an Olympic sport, it's time we provide our youth with a legitimate place to practice.
Wahiawa Skatepark is currently only 3370 square feet - less than half the size of Mililani Skatepark which spans 9864 square feet. The current layout hinders functionality and occupancy, making it difficult for aspiring skaters in our community to hone their skills. Given Wahiawa's central location on the island, expanding this park would not only benefit local skaters but also another unique skatepark for the whole island to enjoy.
Skateboarding has been known as a sport that catches kids who fall through societal cracks - those who may not fit into traditional sports or activities but find solace and purpose in skating. By improving and expanding Wahiawa Skatepark, we can provide these kids with a positive outlet for their energy while encouraging outdoor exercise.
Moreover, an improved skatepark could boost local businesses by attracting more visitors from across the island. It's about more than just providing space for skating; it's about investing in our community as a whole.
Let us work together towards creating better opportunities for our youth while enhancing our community spirit! Sign this petition today to support the expansion and improvement of Wahiawa Skatepark! Mahalo nui!
