Exonerate Innocent Persons Accused of Witchcraft in Colonial Maryland

Exonerate Innocent Persons Accused of Witchcraft in Colonial Maryland
The Issue
Please sign this petition to support clearing the names of Elizabeth Bennett, Hannah Edwards, John Cowman, Mary Lee, Moll Dyer, Rebecca Fowler, and Virtue Violl acknowledging the accused witches of Maryland.
Innocent women in what is now called Maryland fell victim to a grave injustice. Accusations of witchcraft, fueled by fear and ignorance, led to unjust trials and even executions. The most notorious case is that of Rebecca Fowler in 1685, who we know was executed amidst seven known cases from 1654 to 1712. Every voice matters when it comes to rectifying wrongful deeds of the past.
Acknowledging the injustice of historic witch trials is not only a way for Maryland to show commitment to justice but also a model to the world in addressing the wrongful accusations of witchcraft that are unfortunately still happening today. These acts of violence, discrimination and stigma persist, as recognized in the United Nations 2021 Resolution 47/8: Elimination of harmful practices related to accusations of witchcraft and ritual attacks.
This petition seeks to rally support with House Representative Heather Bagnall. We aim to exonerate those accused, tried, or convicted of witchcraft in the Province of Maryland prior to the American Revolution. Our belief in just society urges us to address these glaring miscarriages of justice and give the accused their long-deserved exoneration. This is the responsibility of all of us, descendants and the public.
