We are writing to express our grave concern regarding the recent changes to Meta's platform policies that allow language labeling LGBTQ+ individuals as "ill." This policy not only perpetuates harmful stereotypes but also contradicts medical consensus and endangers the safety and dignity of millions of users worldwide.

The World Health Organization declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1990, recognizing that sexual orientation is a natural variation of human diversity. By allowing such derogatory language, Meta disregards this global medical standard and risks normalizing stigma and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals.

In the United States alone, more than 11 million adults identify as LGBTQ+, including approximately 1.3 million transgender individuals. Additionally, 34 states and the District of Columbia have implemented policies protecting LGBTQ+ rights, reflecting widespread societal support for equality and inclusion.

Allowing hateful rhetoric that frames LGBTQ+ identities as illnesses contributes to a culture of intolerance and fosters real-world harm, including increased rates of mental health struggles and violence. As a global leader in social media, Meta has a profound responsibility to promote respect, inclusivity, and safety for all users.

We urge Meta to reconsider and reverse this harmful policy change. Restoring protections that prohibit language labeling LGBTQ+ individuals as "ill" is not only aligned with global medical standards but also demonstrates Meta’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable online environment.
