Exelon Environmental Responsibility Susquehanna River - Peach Bottom Marina
The Issue
SAVE PEACH BOTTOM MARINA!
Exelon has been given the privilege of utilizing the Susquehanna River to operate the Power Plant located between the Holtwood and Conowingo Dams known as the Conowingo Pond.
This privilege is given with federal regulatory requirements and operational licensing requirements including environmental obligations, public safety and recreational accessibility.
They are currently requesting to be relicensed for 40 years.
Relicensing requires them to address a multitude of issues with dozens of environmental and recreational groups. Primarily due to damage and negligence of trapping sedimentation between the dams to the maximum fill-level.
Exelon has known of the issue for years. The severity and the magnitude of neglect will continue unless they are required to manage it.
Peach Bottom Marina is one of the best examples of their neglect. The Marina offers the only safe and viable access to the waterway on the Lancaster County side of river.
Rescue crews rely on Peach Bottom Marina for location and fast access. Lives are at risk, minutes count. Without access at Peach Bottom Marina emergency evacuation accessibility requires rescue crews to drive 40 minutes across the river to launch rescue boats before they even begin the water rescue attempt.
Exelon prevents access to the waterway with water levels they control. Rescue crews, boaters, waterfront homeowners and Peach Bottom Marina do not have access to the waterway unless recreational minimum depths are in place.
Exelon admitted their negligence in 2012 with members from the Susquehanna River Boaters Association and Peach Bottom Marina Owners.
They committed to dredging Peach Bottom Marina as part of their relicensing request with FERC. Since then, the project has been left go, year after year pushed back, delayed again.
Scheduled to take place 2015. Delayed. 2016 delayed. 2017 delayed.
March 2018 response from Exelon: "Dredging on target, all permits ready. Will begin August 2018."
July 3, 2018 message from Exelon when asked for dredging schedule: "Sorry, if it were a week sooner we'd be scheduling the dredging. $$$$$ lawsuit in Maryland. Dredging in Peach Bottom will not happen."
It is time for visibility, responsibility and ownership.
They have taken from this resource for years. Avoided the issues and continue to do so. The magnitude of damage due to years of neglect has to be addressed.
