The Issue

Current Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines include testing for Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) as part of their standard drug screening tests for Truckers. This petition aims to challenge and change that practice. With the continued growth and acceptance of legal cannabis use, both medicinal and recreational, in various states across the United States, this part of the drug test seems outdated and unnecessary.

Currently Federal Employees living in states where recreational Cannabis use is legal, are exempt from being tested for THC use, even though it is currently not legal on a Federal Level.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, There are currently 39 of 50 states for medical use and 24 states for recreational use.
The American public's perception of cannabis and cannabinoids is shifting, with a Gallup poll in 2023 showing that 70% of Americans support the legalization of marijuana. Despite this, DOT testing still includes THC, potentially targeting law-abiding citizens using a legal substance.

We therefore petition the Department of Transportation to reconsider and update their drug testing policy to exclude THC from the standard drugs tested for. This change can make a huge difference in the lives of those who rely on cannabis for their medical needs and those who live in states where it is legal and are using it responsibly. Please support this necessary change and sign this petition.
