Exclude CBP from CSN's career fair
The Issue
I am a student at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN), and as someone who values the integrity and values of my education community, I feel compelled to address a concerning issue. The inclusion of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in our career fairs does not align with the inclusive and diverse environment that CSN strives to maintain.
CSN is hosting a career fair on WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 23 2026, 10AM to 2PM at NORTH LAS VEGAS CAMPUS. In the employer list among all services attending the event U.S. Customs and Border Protection is listed. U.S. CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION AND IMMIGRATION CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT ARE SEPARATE FEDERAL AGENCIES THRY BOTH OPERATE UNDER THE DHS (DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY). while there is only unarmed recruitment agents attending the career fair, students have previously expressed their discomfort with them attending which caused them to back out last school year.
College is supposed to be a safe space for students to explore careers that foster community, justice, and compassion. The presence of a law enforcement agency known for questionable conduct undermines this environment. Several students & faculty members have expressed feeling intimidated and uncomfortable knowing CBP is attending CSNs career fair knowing there are many undocumented & international students who attend CSN on a day to day basis.
Why should an institution that prides itself on diversity and equality provide a platform for an organization whose actions have been widely criticized for undermining these very principles? Excluding CBP from our career fairs would send a strong message that CSN stands firmly with its student body's values, promoting workplaces that align with human dignity and respect for all cultures.
We urge the administration of the College of Southern Nevada to reconsider CBP's participation in our career fairs. Let us create a career fair environment that supports all students and reflects the true spirit of our community. Please sign this petition to stand by the values that make our college a place of learning, growth, and mutual respect.USE YOUR FIRST AMENDMENTS RIGHTS TO MAKE A CHANGE!
