“Protect Queer Kids: Promote LGBTQ Education and Stop the discrimination”

The Issue

In the Philippines, queer children have become the target of violence and ridicule. They often receive harsh treatment from others and if we’re going to list them down then it may take a while, this is not really trying to make people monstrous creatures but realistically speaking, if we knew that violence against all individuals is very dangerous then that also applies to the LGBTQ+ community too or it might be worse than what we know. Discrimination is not new to them.

Some people catcall the individuals that are part of the community, others experience such brutality that can be seen on the national television that has been done against them. These cases should be an eye-opener to us to root where this comes from and what this leads us to. It all starts at home and in school. Bullying is more prevalent in secondary schools as it was in primary and elementary as queerness is ridiculed and villainized.

Because of this, schools have become a less safe space, not only for queer children, but also for children who restrict themselves from ever exploring their identity or sexuality.

The Philippines is known to be one of the countries with most Catholics around the world. In fact, it is one of the two most Catholic countries in Asia and comes in third around the world with over 85 million Catholics in the country, but this does not stop here as the country has many other religions in it including Christians, Muslims, and many more.

The country proudly boasts to be the only Christian nation in Asia. More than 86 percent of the population is Roman Catholic, 6 percent belong to various nationalized Christian groups, and another 2 percent belong to well over 100 Protestant denominations. It is without a doubt as to why the country is known to be very religious and to have that many citizens a member of a specific religion, because of its undying history.

Thus, the country is very conservative when it comes to the topic about LGBTQ+, which sometimes is being regarded as taboo. Which in turn results in lack of information, ignorance, and worst microaggressions towards the community. These microaggressions also happen at school that is supposed to be the second home of all children. Nevertheless, it is not yet too late to break this since new generations are becoming more and more open about the said topic.

If we are able to educate youth about the different spectrums of the LGBTQ+ community, we are going to help those who are exploring their sexuality to come to terms with their identity. We can also help eradicate the microaggressions and discriminations in general from other non-LGBT people, creating a safe space for everyone in our community.

So we, The Queer Kids, are inviting you to please sign our petition and join us in our movement in eradicating the discrimination and enlighten people about the LGBTQ+ community. Let us use our voice in making a change.
