The Issue

Humans are the most powerful species on this planet, but does that automatically give us the moral right to do whatever we want to with animals? Animals are just like us, they breath, eat, sleep, give birth to young and feed there young's (mammals) should they not be treated like us? I do not think its ethical that we have the right to enslave, torture and kill our fellow creatures. They should be give equal consideration to humans. Many dictators and tyrants have enslaved, tortured and murdered their fellow citizens over the centuries because, for whatever reason, they felt superior and had the power to do what they wanted. On a daily basis, around the globe, animals live under a sickening dictatorship ruled over by their tyrannical human ‘masters’. There are numerous double standards where there are animal welfare laws and agreed protocols in place for certain animals. A tiny percentage of animals are legally protected because they are on the verge of extinction, a small selection of animals are considered to be pets, but the vast majority of animals are dealt with very differently. Most of the animals on this planet are treated like property or as a resource to be exploited. Animals of relatively high intelligence are farmed with minimal care for their well-being. Animals are killed in gruesome conditions on a mass scale every day. Around the globe natural habitats for animals are reducing each year because of the human imperative for commercial gain. I don't think people comprehend how disgusting and truly sad this whole thing is, we need to step forward and really educate ourselves. If you were to step inside a lab and see with your own eyes what we has humans do to protect ourselves from some abnormal chemical that might be found in our newest mascara, is it really worth blinding a monkey for it? Like really people, are we really that consumed with ourselves for a fucking lipstick or eyeshadow. If we need to test on another species to find out, then I'm pretty sure we shouldn't be using it on ourselves. Period. We should be more aware and empathetic towards the plight and suffering of animals. As anarchists, we would agree that we want to create a society where animals have a respected place. The whole relationship between human and animal can be transformed, just as the relationships between people will be. However, will this mean that animals will cease to have any role in the satisfaction of human needs? Will they just hang around where they want and get on with their lives? Will humans never again have to kill an animal? Though I do not want to rule out this scenario, I do not think it is a realistic option, but each day every one of us can make choices to ease the suffering of our fellow creatures.
