The Issue
For years the schools in the Nevada Joint Union High School District have severely struggled with campus culture. Incidents of harassment, discrimination, and hate crimes have plagued our schools. The way these issues are being handled is unjust, and inadequate. Our current solutions aren't strong enough to yield the results necessary to ensure the safety of our students. Something has to change. Whether it be unfair consequences against hateful actions or insensitive approaches to the demands and severity of the situation the students are tired. Tired of not feeling supported by their school board and community. Tired of not feeling welcomed. Tired of not feeling safe. And most importantly tired of the constant battle with a school board that should be fighting for us, not against us. Something has to change. The way these issues are currently being approached and handled isn't moving us in a forward or productive direction. We remain in a state we've been in for years; in limbo, trying to take action, but lacking support and confirmation that the school board has the students' best interest at hand. We deserve a community and school board whose mission is to uplift its students and combat any issues efficiently. Change must occur. The top priority of any school board should be that all students feel valued and welcomed. This priority is not being met. For the safety of our students, staff and well-being of our high school populations it is a necessity that this resolution gets passed. This resolution reinforces that all students belong; this is something that is impossible to achieve with a school board fighting back. We are in dire need of your support. In no world should students go to school feeling unsafe, unwelcome, or insecure in their environment. Something has to change. This resolution is where we begin.
NEVADA JOINT UNION HIGH SCHOOL BOARD
RESOLUTION NO. 22-24/25
EVERY STUDENT BELONGS
WHEREAS, it is the right of every child to access a free and appropriate public K-12 education and the Nevada Joint Union High School District welcomes and supports all students;
WHEREAS, the District has a responsibility to ensure that all students who reside within its boundaries can safely access a free public education as mandated by law.
WHEREAS, NJUHSD is resolute in its mission to build an inclusive, safe, and equitable educational environment that places the success of ALL marginalized and non-marginalized students at the forefront of its work; and
WHEREAS, public schools and school districts in California are subject to all federal and state laws prohibiting discrimination.
WHEREAS, we will work to eliminate barriers and promote student success across race, social
class, geographic location, immigration status or other personal characteristics such as creed, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, age, economic status, gender, sexual orientation including gender expression or identity, pregnancy status, marital status, physical appearance, or the presence of any sensory, mental or physical disability; and
WHEREAS, the NJUHSD Board recognizes the importance of policies and practices that promote belonging, respect, and dignity that lead directly to the educational and life success and health and wellbeing of all district students.
WHEREAS, through its policies and practices, the District has made a commitment to a quality education which includes a safe and stable learning environment that is affirming for all students
WHEREAS, the District supports education that celebrates our different identities; integrity in
how we treat others; and courage to do what’s right by listening to, learning from, and respecting diverse viewpoints;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Nevada Joint Union High School Board affirms its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety, inclusion, belonging, and affirmation of ALL students.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the District prohibits discrimination and bullying against all persons, regardless of personal characteristics, identifications or immigration status; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board declares the District a place to learn, to thrive, and to seek assistance, information, and support free from discrimination and bullying; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board will continue to implement and uphold policies that prohibit discrimination, harassment, and bullying and will work to strengthen a culture of respect and belonging for all.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Nevada Joint Union High School Board stands in solidarity with all students and remains committed to upholding their rights, dignity, and educational success.
Now is the time to take action. The students and families of the NJUHSD school district have dealt with this long enough. It's impossible to be successful as a school when these guidelines of belonging and community are not being carried out or reinforced. Change is synonymous with growth. We cannot grow as a community, school, or as people if this change does not occur. This cannot continue. Sign this petition to ensure it doesn't.
