Save and Protect the Gray Whales!
The Issue
Do you want to see a friendly summer resident gray whale harpooned and then shot with a 50 caliber gun to put it out of its misery?
From Northern California to southern British Columbia we have a small population of 232 gray whales that summer in these areas to feed. This genetically unique population does not go all the way to Alaska but feeds off the Northwest Coast. Since the same whales come back year to year, they have been given names and are friendly to humans and boats. A Native American Tribe off Neah Bay Washington, the Makah, wants to kill them!
Gray Whales are majestic animals that make up a critical part of the ecosystem. Living whales are much more important than dead whales since the ecotourism they provide gives tremendous joy to millions of people around the world plus boosts the economy in these areas! In addition whales are an important sink for carbon, trapping 33 tons of carbon in its body and this stored carbon does not contribute to climate change. Also whale excrement jump starts the food chain by excreting tons of iron and nitrogen into the environment and since whales excrete at the surface, this “Whale Pump” shifts nutrients from deeper in the water column to the surface.
Gray Whales are already facing a lack of food with many skinny whales, increasing attacks from killer whales with up to 30% being killed by orcas, man-made problems like getting entangled in crab pots, hit by boats, etc. and ingesting plastics.
Please let’s not put them under additional harm! Join our cause to help protect and save these wonderful animals by signing this petition!
