Save Whistleblower Dr Sunil Upadhyay

The Issue

Dear Fellow Indians,

My name is Dr Sunil Upadhyay and I am a government officer, the same government officer who is usually sluggish, mostly corrupt, hardly does his job, always finds an excuse for delaying the work and yet draws a fat salary from the taxes that you all have to pay from your hard earned savings. However my friends; those who grew up with me at my village, studied with me in school, spent time with me at University of Delhi campus find me foolishly honest. They believe that I am one of those officers who would rather compromise his life instead of compromising his duty. My friends warn me that I have stretched my love for this country to the limit of impracticality, and I tell them that I have only begun. I am a PhD in Chemistry from University of Delhi, working as Chief Conservator at Indian Museum Kolkata. I have also been working on documentation of Swami Vivekanand’s speech in Chicago and have represented my country during a delegation level visit in Chicago recently. Above all I care for the safety of the rich and rare artefacts at Indian Museum. Of late I have been concerned about the illicit trade of Indian artefacts in international market and have been vocal about it. People say it’s dangerous for me to speak up against such powerful people but again, it’s about doing my duty and protecting country’s rich heritage.

I have been missing since July 3rd, 2014 from my residence in Kolkata and my friends back there at Delhi University are worried about me. They fear that I have fallen prey to the powerful anti-national elements, who make a living out of selling country’s rich heritage. To be honest, I am also a little worried this time, not for my own safety but for the reason that if I never return and go down fighting against corruption while doing my duty, it will send a wrong message to every one of my friend who vouch for my honesty and integrity. They will never teach their kids that being honest, doing our duty and loving our country is a good thing.  As someone who led his whole life with absolute purity and honesty, I don’t want my life to be made an example where being honest becomes a crime and loving our country is considered an act of foolishness.

My friends at Delhi University are fighting for my safe return and an independent investigation into this case and I think that you should support them. Not for me, not for my friends but for the next generation.
