Every Dog Deserves to Dress Up: A Call for Inclusive Sizing in the Pet Apparel Industry
The Issue
Poppy was preparing for the biggest role of her life: flower girl. All eyes would be on her as she glided down the aisle, and she needed a gown that would steal the show. Something dramatic. Something glamorous.
But the dog fashion industry was not prepared for Poppy.
Poppy is a beautiful, big-boned, broad-chested bi***. She has curves. She has presence. She has a substantial rib cage. And finding formalwear to accommodate her was nearly impossible.
There were gowns for Chihuahuas. Tutus for Yorkies. Tulle for Pomeranians. Sequins for Shih Tzus. The petite girls had an embarrassment of riches.
But for Poppy?
The racks were silent.
Apparently, once a dog becomes broad-chested, the fashion industry expects her to abandon glamour entirely. Even the alleged “XL” and “XXL” options were insulting. XXL WHERE? On whom? Because they certainly weren't accentuating Poppy’s curves in the way they deserved to be accentuated.
And the thing is? Poppy is not alone.
Every day, Labs, Goldens, Pitties, German Shepherds, Great Danes, beautiful rescue mutts like Poppy, and other big-boned beauties are being denied their God-given right to be overdressed.
They have weddings to attend. Holiday cards to pose for. Birthday parties. They have quinceañeras, bar mitzvahs, black-tie galas, garden parties, and charity luncheons to attend to.
They have places to be.
After an exhaustive search and an unwavering refusal to let Poppy's broad chest stand between her and her moment, we finally got our girl into a gown, thanks to a wonderfully inclusive Etsy seamstress.
She walked down that aisle in blue satin and flowers.
She looked spectacular. She stole the show.
And frankly, the fact that the dog apparel industry almost deprived the world of this moment is something we cannot ignore.
So we're asking pet apparel brands to expand their sizing and start designing clothing for the actual bodies of larger dogs.
Give the big girls the gowns. Give the broad-chested boys the tuxedos. Give the barrel-bodied beauties the sequins.
A bandana is not formalwear.
Please sign this petition in solidarity with Poppy and big-boned dogs everywhere.
BIG DOGS DESERVE BIG FASHION.
