Give Residents the Option to End Our Leases Early

Give Residents the Option to End Our Leases Early
The Issue
UPDATE: AS OF 3/17, LHU HAS DECIDED TO COMPLETE THE REMAINDER OF THE SPRING 2020 SEMESTER ONLINE
The COVID-19 outbreak has disrupted daily lives for almost everyone in America. Many PASSHE schools (Clarion, Slippery Rock, and Indiana State Universities) have all made the transition to finish their semesters via online classes. Lock Haven University has not officially announced to complete the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester classes online. However, I am sure that LHU will follow in the footsteps of the other 14 State Universities to ensure the safety and well-being of its students, faculty, and staff. In the event of this happening, many Evergreen Commons residents would want move out and return home.
Many Evergreen Commons residents have leases until the end of this spring semester (May 2020) and are required to pay our monthly installments until then. In the event of LHU completing the remainder of classes online, many students, particularly Evergreen Commons Residents, will want to go home. If we will not be living there, then why should we have to continue to pay our lease? I understand that we signed off on a lease before moving in some time ago. However, with the state of emergency that we are all in right now, socially, mentally, and especially financially due to many jobs being frozen — I feel that Evergreen Commons should amend leases for those who want to move out prior to the end of their lease. Why should us, college students, have to pay roughly $700 for an empty apartment to complete school work from the safety, and comfort of our homes. The COVID-19 pandemic is serious and students should not be punished for wanting to terminate our leases early. Students may also be potentially exposed to the disease due to a large population of residents and students gathering belongings to return safely home.
I have reached out to all of the managers in the Evergreen Commons office, and they have said that they will not be altering any leases in the event that LHU would transition to online classes for the rest of the semester (which is highly likely due to the rapid spread of COVID-19). The managers have been more than kind with their responses with all of my and many others' questions about the lease issue. I understand they have a job to do, and want to follow the rules by their managing company, Greystar. However, they should listen to their residents and value their opinions of how to run their company rather than be greedy during this chaotic time by taking advantage of this situation.
Please feel free to sign this petition if you are a resident of Evergreen Commons, a student of LHU, a parent of a student at LHU or Evergreen Commons, or a citizen who is concerned with the well being of students financially from a greedy company.
