Through human decisions and actions, God is at work in economic life. Economic life is intended to be a means through which God’s purposes for humankind and creation are to be served. When this does not occur, as a church we cannot remain silent because of who and whose we are.

An open letter to Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton from ELCA leaders

Dear Bishop Eaton,
In the consultation paper published on July 25, 2016 (Called Forward Together in Christ for the Sake of the World) we read that one of the highest priorities across the ELCA today is leadership and leadership development. Concerns were raised across the church about clergy debt and morale, training and empowering lay leaders, and increasing the diversity of lay and ordained leadership. “There is strong agreement about what is needed but less clarity about how to get there” (Called Forward, p. 12.)
We submit that one crucial step on the path to getting there will be an ELCA-wide re-commitment to the ethical standards outlined in our social statement on economic life, which was adopted at the 1999 Churchwide Assembly.
The social statement includes a section on dignity, and this commitment by the ELCA:
We commit ourselves as a church to:
· hire without discriminating on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, age, disabilities, sexual orientation, or genetic factors;
· compensate all people we call or employ at an amount sufficient for them to live in dignity;
· provide adequate pension and health benefits, safe and healthy work conditions, sufficient periods of rest, vacation, and sabbatical, and family-friendly work schedules;
· cultivate participatory workplaces, support the right of employees to organize for the sake of better working conditions and to engage in collective bargaining, and refrain from intentionally undercutting union organizing activities, or from permanently replacing striking workers.

In the ELCA in 2016, how are we living up to this commitment? How are we failing to live up to it? If we expect more pastors to be bi-vocational, as Called Forward suggests, do we also expect more congregations to provide sabbath and sabbatical time? What protections do clergy and lay employees over 50 have when they become “too expensive” due to rising health insurance costs? We applaud LTSP/Gettysburg for leading the way in seminary scholarships; will there be debt relief for pastors already serving? How does the ELCA plan to address the ongoing experience of people of color and LGBTQ leaders waiting years to find employment in ELCA congregations, and encountering serious discrimination in the hiring/call process?
In June, the elimination of Julie Sevig’s managing editor position at Living Lutheran brought strong reactions from leaders across the ELCA. Julie was nearing 20 years with the Churchwide Organization, first on the Youth Ministries/ELCA Youth Gathering team and since 2000 on The Lutheran (now Living Lutheran). For many of us, Julie’s work with our church’s publications was instrumental in telling the story of our church. Her name was recognizable, the “voice” in her stories familiar and appreciated. As managing editor of the church’s magazine, her byline was a signature part of its flagship publication.
While “downsizing” and “reorganization” have become commonplace in our society and even in our church, such action must be done with thoughtfulness, compassion and dignity. We mourn that Julie was given no warning, just “today is your last day.” We regret the lost opportunity to celebrate her long and excellent service to the church.
When we read about “making hard decisions” and “letting some things die” (Called Forward, p. 12) we wonder about the possibility of more reorganization ahead. Before more layoffs take place, we call on the ELCA to examine its practices and ensure that they meet the ethical guidelines regarding dignity set out in our social statement. As a church, we must operate with compassion for the dignity and livelihood of those who serve.
As we seek to be a church moving from welcome to genuine inclusion (Called Forward, p. 12,) it is crucial that we face and amend discriminatory practices within our institution. A focus on employment practices will reveal specific areas we can address together as a church, and will make the ELCA overall more inclusive, compassionate, and attentive to the dignity of the people who serve at all levels of the organization. This is a place to begin: a way for us to “get there,” together.
We call on the ELCA presiding bishop, council, and council of bishops to work together to determine the best path for getting our church—at all levels and in all expressions—into alignment with the 1999 social statement on economic life. We look to our leaders to end discriminatory practices, and practices that do not maintain the dignity of workers.
We give thanks for the ministry and leadership of Julie Sevig and for all who have served the ELCA since its formation, especially those who have lost their jobs due to reorganization. To these beloved of God we say: you have lost your jobs; you cannot lose your vocation. Thank you, thank you, for your faithful service.

The Issue
Through human decisions and actions, God is at work in economic life. Economic life is intended to be a means through which God’s purposes for humankind and creation are to be served. When this does not occur, as a church we cannot remain silent because of who and whose we are.

An open letter to Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton from ELCA leaders

Dear Bishop Eaton,
In the consultation paper published on July 25, 2016 (Called Forward Together in Christ for the Sake of the World) we read that one of the highest priorities across the ELCA today is leadership and leadership development. Concerns were raised across the church about clergy debt and morale, training and empowering lay leaders, and increasing the diversity of lay and ordained leadership. “There is strong agreement about what is needed but less clarity about how to get there” (Called Forward, p. 12.)
We submit that one crucial step on the path to getting there will be an ELCA-wide re-commitment to the ethical standards outlined in our social statement on economic life, which was adopted at the 1999 Churchwide Assembly.
The social statement includes a section on dignity, and this commitment by the ELCA:
We commit ourselves as a church to:
· hire without discriminating on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, age, disabilities, sexual orientation, or genetic factors;
· compensate all people we call or employ at an amount sufficient for them to live in dignity;
· provide adequate pension and health benefits, safe and healthy work conditions, sufficient periods of rest, vacation, and sabbatical, and family-friendly work schedules;
· cultivate participatory workplaces, support the right of employees to organize for the sake of better working conditions and to engage in collective bargaining, and refrain from intentionally undercutting union organizing activities, or from permanently replacing striking workers.

In the ELCA in 2016, how are we living up to this commitment? How are we failing to live up to it? If we expect more pastors to be bi-vocational, as Called Forward suggests, do we also expect more congregations to provide sabbath and sabbatical time? What protections do clergy and lay employees over 50 have when they become “too expensive” due to rising health insurance costs? We applaud LTSP/Gettysburg for leading the way in seminary scholarships; will there be debt relief for pastors already serving? How does the ELCA plan to address the ongoing experience of people of color and LGBTQ leaders waiting years to find employment in ELCA congregations, and encountering serious discrimination in the hiring/call process?
In June, the elimination of Julie Sevig’s managing editor position at Living Lutheran brought strong reactions from leaders across the ELCA. Julie was nearing 20 years with the Churchwide Organization, first on the Youth Ministries/ELCA Youth Gathering team and since 2000 on The Lutheran (now Living Lutheran). For many of us, Julie’s work with our church’s publications was instrumental in telling the story of our church. Her name was recognizable, the “voice” in her stories familiar and appreciated. As managing editor of the church’s magazine, her byline was a signature part of its flagship publication.
While “downsizing” and “reorganization” have become commonplace in our society and even in our church, such action must be done with thoughtfulness, compassion and dignity. We mourn that Julie was given no warning, just “today is your last day.” We regret the lost opportunity to celebrate her long and excellent service to the church.
When we read about “making hard decisions” and “letting some things die” (Called Forward, p. 12) we wonder about the possibility of more reorganization ahead. Before more layoffs take place, we call on the ELCA to examine its practices and ensure that they meet the ethical guidelines regarding dignity set out in our social statement. As a church, we must operate with compassion for the dignity and livelihood of those who serve.
As we seek to be a church moving from welcome to genuine inclusion (Called Forward, p. 12,) it is crucial that we face and amend discriminatory practices within our institution. A focus on employment practices will reveal specific areas we can address together as a church, and will make the ELCA overall more inclusive, compassionate, and attentive to the dignity of the people who serve at all levels of the organization. This is a place to begin: a way for us to “get there,” together.
We call on the ELCA presiding bishop, council, and council of bishops to work together to determine the best path for getting our church—at all levels and in all expressions—into alignment with the 1999 social statement on economic life. We look to our leaders to end discriminatory practices, and practices that do not maintain the dignity of workers.
We give thanks for the ministry and leadership of Julie Sevig and for all who have served the ELCA since its formation, especially those who have lost their jobs due to reorganization. To these beloved of God we say: you have lost your jobs; you cannot lose your vocation. Thank you, thank you, for your faithful service.
