Eurovision: EBU & BBC DO NOT go ahead with a new qualifier announcement system

The Issue

The EBU and the BBC have planned a new qualifier announcement system for the Semi Finals of the Eurovision Song Contest. Previously the qualifiers stay in the green room alongside their delegations with whom they have worked with over the past few months on their Eurovision entry. However, this year the EBU & BBC have decided to single out the artists and randomly announce who is qualifying while they're all stood on stage, alone and without their support. This is both cruel and makes for a bad TV.

The Eurovision Song Contest over the past few years has lost its charm and is slowly shifting into becoming like any other singing/talent competition on TV. The Eurofan community are very passionate about these changes not just because they make for bad and generic TV gimmic, but also because we care for the wellbeing of the artists.

Reasons why this is a horrible idea:

  • Cheap TV gimmick used by many talent competitions. Paints Eurovision in a bad light and places it in the same box as all the other TV shows.
  • Traumatising moment for the artist. To be put through that in case they don't qualify, to be left all alone without their delegations is truly cruel.
  • Interviewing after 5 qualifiers drags out the show and is completely unecessary.

We want this qualification announcement system to not be used in both Semi Final 1 and Semi Final 2 shows and instead revert to the usual system of the artists staying in the green room alongside the delegations.
