Five years ago, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the European Union demonstrated a clear inability to fulfill one of its most fundamental responsibilities: protecting its citizens in the face of a significant threat.

This failure was not limited to the EU alone; its Member States also proved equally incapable. The severe health crisis was followed by a series of interconnected challenges—rising inflation, energy shortages, the war in Ukraine, conflict in the Middle East, and more. Regrettably, any pragmatic assessment of these events led to the same conclusion: neither the EU nor its Member States are able to meet the expectations of their citizens.

In response to this unacceptable situation, Together for Europe – the Movement for the European Federal Union was established. This grassroots movement aims to unite millions of democratic Europeans who, despite embracing a wide spectrum of political views and ideological perspectives, are united by a shared belief in the urgent need to establish a new federal state in Europe: the European Federal Union.

We must not forget that the European project emerged in the aftermath of World War II, inspired by the vision of a united and peaceful Europe.

Over the decades, this project has achieved remarkable progress, and despite the challenges Europe faces today, it remains one of the most prosperous and desirable regions in the world to live in. However, it has become increasingly evident that the process of European integration has stalled and is losing its momentum. In our view, the governments of EU Member States, regardless of how strongly they profess their commitment to Europe, are unlikely to take the decisive steps needed to advance toward a federal integration of the continent.

Yet, this step is essential to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness required for Europe to reclaim its leading role on the global stage.

Consider, for example, the issue of defense spending: it is absurd to ask European taxpayers to bear a higher burden for defense while simultaneously funding 27 separate military infrastructures. The same logic applies to healthcare, research and development, and many other aspects of our lives.

We, the people of Europe, demand an end to this irrationality. We call for the democratic integration of Europe into a federal state—the European Federal Union—with a democratically elected federal government, a unified military, a federal bank, and a federal court. 

We endorse the Rome Manifesto, published in March 2017 by a group of leading young Europeans, as a pragmatic and feasible roadmap for achieving the European Federal Union. We envision this Union as a global superpower of peace, stability, prosperity, justice, equality, safety, and security. The creation of this federal state will not only serve the best interests of the European people but will also benefit our transatlantic partners and the world at large. 

Together, we can build a stronger, more united Europe.
