Increasing wind for Poland's invalidation suit, umbrella for the continuing Uploadfilter storm, mighty hail in the form of chatcontrol, short storm at the german state Trojan - and a rainbow for SaveTheInternet!
In terms of digital policy, we can't rest on our laurels!
(For this we now even get an award ... More details down below...)
Keyword uploadfilter
Poland's lawsuit for annulment of Article 17 is still pending. The leading plea of the Advocate General of the ECJ is expected on July 15. The outcome of this case could declare uploadfilters to be contrary to EU fundamental rights once and for all and thus also put a brake on other related ideas of the EU (*cough* TERREG *cough*).
The german regulation: The grand coalition has created facts. Regardless of their promises and assurances, regardless of their coalition agreement, the upload filters are now coming. The platforms still have time until August 1, 2021 to implement the directive or to integrate upload filters into their systems.
We are curious to see how many videos and memes will say goodbye to the Internet forever on this day.
Continuing in the digital policy text...
At EU level, things are again going completely in the wrong direction: The abolition of digital privacy of correspondence is imminent.
The ePrivacy Directive, which has not yet been adopted, apparently protects citizens' privacy quite well - so well that some politicians already want to soften it again.
The EU wants to allow providers to scan all private chats, messages and e-mails for suspicious content without any prior reasonable suspicion. The focus of this fully automated screening is to be on depictions of child abuse, maltreatment and cybergrooming - and according to current findings, it is anything but accurate. Reported cases are then forwarded directly to the relevant authorities - along with clear names - for criminal investigation without any further checks.
Such a chatcontrol is another frontal attack on the digital integrity of citizens and simply places everyone under general suspicion.
The final vote in the European Parliament is scheduled for the session week July 5 - 8, 2021.
A commission draft regarding an obligation of such chat control - and thus a possible abolition of end-to-end encryption - is to follow this summer.
So please write to your EU representatives and make them aware of the issue! Confront the politicians and do not allow them to let such booze ideas pass unseen and without criticism, contrary to all warnings of the experts.
Do you like being old-fashioned? Use your fax! Are you more newbie? Send a meme! Both cool? Yes, do both!
Your voice carries weight because we, civil society, make an impact over and over again!
By the way...
Meanwhile in Germany, the state Trojan is quickly adopted before the end of the legislative period.

And now, we look up to the rainbow: An honorary award for STI!
Something big is happening on Sunday, 04.07.2021:
STI will be awarded a prize for its work around the copyright reform.
More precisely, the Honorary Award for Digital Civic Engagement, which is awarded in cooperation with LOAD e.V., Friedrich Naumann Foundation and Thomas Dehler Foundation. The program includes a laudation by former Federal Minister of Justice Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, a contribution by PietSmiet, and an acceptance speech by us.
The whole thing will take place as a hybrid event from 2pm to 4pm, followed by a Q&A. We will be there live with a small delegation on site in Munich.
For you there is also the possibility to participate digitally. So be there!
