The new life of Alitalia as an again-state-owned carrier has not even started yet, and there is already a bump in the road ahead for the Italian flag carrier. The European Union Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager appears to be inclined to reject the plan proposed by the Italian Government to regain control and ownership of Alitalia through a capital injection of over 3 billion euros ($3.39 billion)..
The plan would see the existing airline, which declared bankruptcy in May 2017 and has been operating under special administration ever since, being handed over to a “New Company” created by the Italian government. A special decree by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, approved on March 18, to support the national economy during the COVID-19 emergency, reserved 500 million euros for the creation of this new company that would subsequently receive a capitalization of at least 3 billion euros.
However It is reporter by medias that investigators in Brussels are not in favor of the operation since it would not provide sufficient “financial discontinuity” between the old Alitalia and the new company, and this would trigger a violation of E.U. rules with regards to state aids.
Several other airlines in Europe, from Lufthansa to KLM to Air France, have received loans and cash injections from their respective governments during the past few weeks to survive the dramatic drop in demand caused by the COVID-19 emergency, but the EU is inclined not to allow Alitalia to receive any more cash handouts since it was already under special administration even before the start of the pandemic.
Furthermore, it has been confirmed that investigations on the previous “bridge loans” received by Alitalia for the amounts of 900 million euros in May 2017 and 400 million euros in December 2019 are still ongoing and will evaluate whether those interventions on behalf of the Italian government were legal under EU rules on state aid.
This aid plan at the beginning was thought and required as an help for the entire Italian branch and it’s turning only as an help for the national carrier.
In 2016 another Italian carrier Meridiana a private and second Italian carrier operating for more than 60 years with great expertise of pilots, Cabin crew and maintenance and ground staff became part of a great project substained and wanted by the Italian government by signing a merge between this airline and Qatar Airways.
The major asset of Meridiana in addition to it’s expertise (workers) was the strategic network both on domestic flights including the “continuità territoriale” with the islands and the great number of flights towards USA.
Akfed fund related to Prince Aga Khan detained 51% and the Qatary airline the remaining 49%.
The result of this merge gave life to AIR ITALYwith a great project of growth. After less than two years on February the 11th 2020 Qatar suddenly decided to leave from a day to another bringing the airline to immediate liquidation.
1500 workers were left home and still waiting for help by the government.
Government at the moment is considering only Alitalia with the Newco plan not taking their responsibility for what happened to AIR ITALY workers. They wanted this merge, they signed for it!
The main problem is that those workers are not even considered to take part to the re-launch of Alitalia (ITA).
If the Italian government has requested money and aid by the EU for the entire aviation branch so why are these people (AIR ITALYworkers) been left outside this project of a unique Italian Airline?????? Why are the others also left outside considering that all Italian airlines are struggling???How can they show and demonstrate a real discontinuity???? It seems like as these money have been request to allow once again Alitalia to have public money and help by the EU using a fake generic money request for Italian aviation.
Apparently is caring about the national aviation considering that all the money requested (if authorized) will be used for Alitalia survival ONLY!!!
Please consider AIR ITALY WORKERS and other Italian aviation workers as part of this project of NEWCO. NO DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WORKERS SHOULD BE MADE!!!!
Aiutate l’intero settore!
