We must Save EWEB Forest!
The Issue
The Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB) has plans to clear-cut one of Eugene's last remaining mature, urban forests in early August. This would be the first step in the construction of two massive reservoirs in the heart of a South Eugene neighborhood. We firmly believe this is no time to destroy one of the few rare resources our community has to battle the threat of heat waves that are a DIRECT result of our climate crisis!
The public process that led to the decisions involved was seriously flawed with inadequate outreach. We must demand from EWEB and our local leaders they immediately provide a public hearing that includes the entire Eugene community to weigh all the solutions available to get BOTH water storage upgrades AND allow our urban forests to stand and protect us (cooling and carbon sequestration*). We demand creative problem solving and real leadership. We can no longer allow business as usual to continue without challenge, as it has become clear that climate change has now arrived at our doorstep!
Please visit our website to find out more about the issue and how you can get involved TODAY!
* Every year, urban trees in the U.S. offer an estimated $18.3 billion in services to society from air pollution removal, carbon sequestration, lowered energy use in buildings and reduced emissions from power plants. (Source: USDA Forest Service)
