Justice for Hood-winked Owners of French Leaseback PropertiesAttn: UK Owners - MEP change
Jennie MolphyDublin, Ireland
Jun 14, 2017
As you may know, Vicky Ford was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Chelmsford on 8 June 2017, and consequently has formally stood down as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP).
Following Mrs Ford's letter to Commissioner Věra Jourová on 6 April, and the Commissioner's subsequent reply, Mrs Ford contacted the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) on 29 May, detailing the experience of French leaseback scheme property owners, highlighting individual cases where permission had been granted by the owners.
This issue is affecting citizens from multiple EU countries. The Commissioner therefore recommended that those MEPs who had been contacted by owners should inform their relevant national consumer organisations to collect evidence of specific cases. This will help the national consumer organisations of the UK, Ireland and France develop a coordinated position on the potential infringements. We are now awaiting a response from the UK CMA.
This issue is being forwarded to the Office of Dan Dalton MEP and any UK owners who wish to contact him can do so at daniel.dalton@europarl.europa.eu.
Daniel is a member of the Internal Markets and Consumer Protection Committee.
Any UK owners who have not already submitted their complaint to the CMA should do so not. The standard response is that 'they cannot intervene in individual cases', however they need to be appraised of each case in order to understand the scale and nature of the issues.
Many thanks to Vicky Ford for progressing investigation of the matter and we wish her the best of luck in her new role.
