Etsy are still ignoring us - which will be no news to anyone! We have written twice to the main UK boss for Etsy (Ms Vanderbilt) - and have been dutifully ignored. We reckon Etsy must train their staff to ignore emails that might make them feel a bit uncomfortable. But it is very rude and very poor customer service. We have also told Etsy we want more than anything to work WITH them and not against them - again, this plea (sent twice) has been ignored. We have now started copying in Etsy's legal team in the vain hope that they might step in and do something about their seahorse listings. The interesting thing is that a lot of the seahorse listings are for pendants/keychains mass produced in China. We have pointed out to Etsy that these sellers are also flouting Etsy listing guidelines - that products for sale should be handmade. These are obviously bought in by sellers and sold on. It will be interesting to see how quick off the mark Etsy are in removing these listings for that reason. Talking of these keychains, we found a Chinese supplier on the huge wholesale website, Alibaba. An email to Alibaba resulted in the seller being removed. Alibaba have stated they will not allow CITES-listed animals on their site and have joined forces with TRAFFIC to help stop such illegal online trade. They are not bothered if an animal being sold is Appendix I or Appendix II - unlike Etsy, they have a conscience and will not allow ANY CITES species. We have also had success with Shpock and Preloved - they too have removed seahorse listings we found and have asked us to keep them informed of any more we find. We are waiting to hear from wish.com about some seahorses for sale on there. It is astonishing that, after telling Etsy that Ebay, Amazon Alibaba, Shpock and Preloved all agree it is wrong to sell seahorses and have removed them, Etsy have ignored us (again!) and will not remove seahorses from their website. If other big corporations can do something about seahorses, why can't they? We can only assume that money and making a profit are more important than the predicament of some species on our beautiful planet. The one UK seller we reported to the UK authorities is no longer selling seahorse pendants - we are not sure if that is because the authorities have approached the seller or the seller is sold out, but we hope it is the former. This is the seller who told us they would carry on selling seahorses because Etsy hadn't told them they couldn't - even though we spelt out the law to them in detail. Please keep sharing the petition - Etsy are being incredibly stubborn and rude. If you are able to help in any way with legal services or are a journalist who would like to do a piece on Etsy and seahorses, please email neil.seahorses@tesco.net. As mentioned before, we are only a small charity and can't pay for your services but you will be helping seahorses - which is the important thing!
