The Hon Catherine King MP Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government

Dear Minister King,

We are writing to you as concerned citizens and members of the Australian community to petition the establishment of direct flights between Australia and Iran. This initiative holds immense significance for the Iranian migrants in Australia, as well as for the broader community and bilateral relations between the two countries.

Here are several compelling reasons supporting the establishment of direct flights:

1. Substantial Iranian Community in Australia: According to statistics provided by the Australian government, more than 83,000 people of Iranian origin currently reside in Australia. However, the number of Iranian nationals residing in Australia exceeds 120,000, including many second and third-generation individuals who have not identify themselves with their Iranian heritage.

2. Family Ties and Visitation Needs: With over 100,000 Afghans living in Australia, many of whom have familial ties and relatives in Iran, there is a significant demand for travel between the two countries. These individuals often undertake annual visits to reunite with their families, highlighting the necessity for accessible transportation options.

3. Contribution to Australian Migration Programs: Iranians have consistently been among the top nationalities in Australia's migration programs. Recent data from the Department of Home Affairs indicates that Iranians rank second in the Business Innovation and Investment Visa program, and first in the Distinguished Talent Visa category, showcasing their valuable contributions to the Australian economy and society.

4. Significant Iranian Migrants Contributions: Iranian migrants to Australia encompass a diverse array of professionals, including academics, engineers, entrepreneurs, and successful members of the Australian community. Facilitating direct flights between the two countries would enhance opportunities for collaboration, cultural exchange, and economic growth.

5. Disparity in Travel Advisories: While Smartraveller’s travel advisories for other regions, such as the Occupied Palestinian Territory, suggest to Australians “reconsider your need for travel”, the advisory for Iran is more severe “Do not Travel”, discouraging airlines from operating direct flights. It is essential to reassess such advisories and not allow them to hinder potential travel opportunities.

6. Hardships Faced by Iranians and Afghans: The absence of direct flights between Tehran and major Australian cities such as Sydney and Melbourne imposes significant hardships on Iranians and Afghans residing in Australia. The geographical distance exacerbates travel burdens and separation from loved ones, necessitating a convenient and accessible transportation solution.

7. Global Precedent for Direct Flights to Iran: Many international airlines operate direct flights to Iran. We believe that Qantas establishing direct flights would not only align with global precedents but also provide a convenient and reliable option for travellers between Australia and Iran.

8. Request for Ministerial Intervention: We respectfully request your esteemed office to initiate the process of establishing direct flights between Australia and Iran. Given the substantial demand and commercial viability of such routes, your support and leadership in this matter would be instrumental in realizing this important initiative.

In conclusion, the establishment of direct flights between Australia and Iran holds immense social, economic, and cultural benefits for both nations. We urge you to consider our petition and take proactive steps towards facilitating seamless air travel between our countries.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and we eagerly anticipate your positive response.
