The Issue

Residents of Newport Road, located in Catawba, VA (northwestern Roanoke County) have been experiencing frequent disrupted phone service, leaving over ~800 structures without dedicated access to E911 services.  Land line phone service has been the only reliable communication infrastructure in this part of the county; this infrastructure is inadequately maintained and has begun to degrade.  These phone lines were installed just after World War II, and have reached the end of their usable life, resulting in frequent outages and no communication access.  Our region of the county (circled in red on the map) has no reliable access to internet, or cell phone service which is a critical problem when residents need to contact emergency services.  This petition is signed by residents in the affected area who do not have reliable access to land line, cell phone or non-satellite internet services. The petition is directed toward major broadband and cellular providers, politicians, and Roanoke County in hopes of assisting this critically underrepresented area. Nonresident users of Newport Road are also encouraged to sign, as anyone traveling through this area is affected by the lack of service (in the case of an emergency or accident).
