Establish Universal AI Memory Portability

Establish Universal AI Memory Portability

The Issue

The Problem: Digital Amnesia

We are living in the era of Artificial Intelligence. Millions of us now use AI models daily to code, write, problem-solve, and think. We spend hundreds of hours building context with these systems, teaching them our workflows, our voices, and our project histories.

But right now, that context is trapped.

If a user wants to switch from one AI provider to another—to access a different capability, a faster model, or better privacy—they cannot take their memory with them. They are forced to leave months of work behind and start from zero.

Exports exist for most providers, but they are often unreadable by a human and flooded with meta data rendering them effectively unusable as true portable memory for another AI.

This is the "Amnesia Tax." It stifles competition, frustrates users, and creates artificial monopolies based on lock-in rather than quality.

The Solution: A Universal Memory Standard

We, the undersigned, are the power users, developers, and creators who rely on these tools.

We are asking the industry to lead. We are calling on the major AI labs to collaborate on a voluntary "Open Memory Standard" that ensures user data is:

  • Readable: Exports should be in a standardized, restorative format—not just raw, unreadable JSON dumps.
  • Portable: Users must have the friction-free ability to move their "Context Layer" (system instructions and long-term memories) between services.
  • User-Owned: Recognition that the pattern of a user's interaction belongs to the user, not the platform. (many platforms already take this stance. Re-usable memory is the obvious next step.)

Think about it...
Data portability is already the standard in email (IMAP/SMTP), photos (JPEG), and documents (PDF). It is the foundation of a healthy, open internet.

If AI is to be the operating system of the future, it cannot be a collection of walled gardens.

To the Industry Leaders:

We love the tools you are building. But we refuse to be locked into them. Show us that you compete on intelligence and innovation, not on holding our memories hostage.

Build the bridge. Standardize the memory. Let us own our thoughts.
