Establish the RCMP Heritage Centre as a National Museum
The Issue
The RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan holds a vital and deep thread of Canada's national story.
As a non-profit, charitable organization, we have been working for the past six years to be established as a National Museum. Once established, it will be only the third National Museum outside of Ottawa/Gatineau, and only the second established in the West.
We are calling on the Government of Canada to fulfill its commitment by officially designating the RCMP Heritage Centre as a National Museum. Establishing the RCMP Heritage Centre as a National Museum was a platform commitment, in a mandate letter, and has been invested in by Government since Budget 2021. Now, all that is needed is a final, legislative decision, and the paperwork to make it official. Government has an incredible opportunity now to take the next step.
6,400 people have responded to a survey, supporting this project. Now, we want 20,000 signatures to demonstrate to our Prime Minister, the support for this project across the country .
It is essential that we see through this commitment to protect what is uniquely Canadian, support national unity, contribute to a strong Canada, and protect this invaluable institution for future generations.
The move to establish the RCMP Heritage Centre as a National Museum will elevate the Centre's role in educating not only Canadians but also international visitors about Canada's rich history, the role and contributions of the RCMP, and telling personal stories from diverse perspectives. We are a place of discovery, exploration, reflection, and reconciliation, deserving to be a part of the rich offering of National Museums to protect and share inspiring, complex, and uniquely Canadian stories.
As a National Museum, it would benefit from increased funding, ensuring that the Centre can continue to offer the world a place for learning, dialogue, and exploring uniquely Canadian stories. Moreover, recognizing the RCMP Heritage Centre as a National Museum will help invigorate local economies, particularly in Regina, by drawing more visitors and tourism-related revenue.
However, the process is not yet complete. Despite its mention in government platforms, decisive action is needed now, more than ever, to finalize this designation.
Join me in urging the Canadian government to take action on this good news decision, and establish the RCMP Heritage Centre as a National Museum. Let us protect and promote our history for the benefit and education of present and future generations.
