Establish Support Systems and Policies to Protect Kids from Toxic Friendships

Establish Support Systems and Policies to Protect Kids from Toxic Friendships
The Issue
I've been a victim of a toxic friendship myself. Back in 2012, what started as a seemingly harmless friendship turned into an extensive period of mental and emotional abuse. I was shot in the leg with a BB gun, had to endure physical assaults and manipulative psychological techniques. Everyone, particularly children, should feel safe in their friendships and no one should have to suffer like I did.
Toxic friendships can dramatically impact a person’s well-being. A study by Concordia University revealed that children who experience victimization, such as psychological or physical abuse, may develop serious emotional and psychological problems. Furthermore, kids victimized by their friends will have more than twice the risk of mental health issues by their mid-20th (Source: Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology).
Thus, we need to establish support systems and school policies that recognize the mental, emotional, and even physical abuse that can come from toxic friendships. School-based mental health services need to be prioritized, with therapists and counselors trained to recognize and advise on toxic friendships. Students should be encouraged to speak up, share their experiences, and ask for help when they need it.
Every child deserves to feel safe, loved, and respected by their friends. The impact of toxic friendships can no longer be overlooked. Let's demand change and ensure that no more children have to suffer in silence. Stand up and sign this petition today to show your support for creating proper policy changes and facilitating an atmosphere where every child feels free to express their feelings and fears.
