Establish Strict Sentencing Guidelines for Animal Abuse Cases

The Issue

This cause is deeply personal to me. Living next door to an animal abuser who remains unpunished despite multiple pieces of video evidence and the clearly poor condition of his animals is a horrifying experience. One of his poorly-treated dogs managed to escape, and I immediately took her to the vet, ensuring she got the help she needed. Yet the RSPCA alleges this man "poses no risk" to his other animals.

Cases like this are not surprising, given that the courts often lack proper sentencing guidelines for animal abuse offenses. As per data reported by the USPCA, a staggering 92.4% of convicts of animal cruelty do not receive a custodial sentence. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), in 2019, received a shocking 1.2 million reports concerning animal cruelty in the UK only, demonstrating the vast extent of the problem (source: BBC News, 2020).

It is high time we address this discrepancy and bring about justice for innocent creatures subjected to senseless cruelty. We urge the judiciary to establish stringent sentencing guidelines for animal abuse cases. These guidelines should account for the severity and frequency of abuse, pushing for mandatory custodial sentences in severe or repeated cases.
