1400 babies are born in the United States every year with A Snowflake Condition called Spina Bifida. Joyful Expecting Parents are told “I’m so sorry your baby will not have any quality of life” But who should determine what livable quality is? Especially when there are so many miracles proving that no difference will fade the light of a child that is loved and supported.

The incredibly skilled Doctors, Surgeons, Nurses, Therapists and Network of Support are never highlighted during initial diagnosis. The lack of Awareness about the condition is alarming and should be readdressed. Mothers in the United States have access to some of the best prenatal care in the world.  No one tells you that SpinaBifida is not just a genetically created condition, that folic acid which comes standard in prenatal vitamins sometimes just doesn’t reach your baby. The majority of Mothers take all the suggested Vitamins and Genetic testing. Sadly with a history of pregnancy losses and unevaluated fetal nutrition intake of folate the unimaginable happens, the spine doesn’t close all the way or has a lesion.  The need for reproductive help like IFV would as well usher many women to become one of the 1400 making a decision to support a child with an unknown degree of potential disabilities.

Now is the time to act and branch out with  routine awareness that new tests should become standard in elevation of folic acid in women hoping to reproduce. Prevention is possible, the epidemic of SpinaBifida didn’t end with the standardization of the Prenatal Vitamin. 

 The wonderfully brave children defying the odds of Spina Bifida are a testimony to the ability to persevere. The sky is no longer the limit in the medical field when it comes to building easier lives for children affected. We see those who cant feel walk, those who won’t quit roll.
