Establish Speed Cameras on Specific Streets in Lents Neighborhood, Portland

The Issue

As a resident of the Lents neighborhood in Portland, I have seen firsthand the frightening speed at which some vehicles travel on our residential streets - Holgate 82nd - 122nd, and Harold 92nd-122nd. Our neighborhood, like any other, is filled with children learning to ride bikes, teenagers learning to drive, and families that deserve to have security in their streets.

Despite several pleas for change, our calls for traffic calming measures have fallen on deaf ears. Speeding continues unabated, and the risks to our community’s safety grow with each passing day. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding killed 9,378 people in 2018 in the United States. This shows just how serious a threat this issue is and why we need immediate action.

I propose the installation of speed cameras on these specific streets to deter and penalize those who continue to speed, disregarding the residents' safety and peace. Speed cameras have proven successful in reducing traffic speeds and crash occurrence in numerous communities around the country.

It is vital to note that this is not just about enforcing speed limits, but about safeguarding our families, our children who are just learning the ropes of life. It's about making our neighborhood a safer place to live, to grow, and to flourish.

Let's band together as a community - for the safety of our kids, the peace of our streets, and the future of Lents. Please sign this petition to urge our local authorities to establish speed cameras on the aforementioned streets.
