The Issue

The state of New Jersey, despite its relatively small size, is characterized by significant cultural, economic, and political differences between its northern and southern regions. These disparities have led to a growing sentiment among the residents of South Jersey for independence from North Jersey. This petition seeks to address this issue by advocating for the establishment of South Jersey as an independent state within the United States.

South Jersey has a distinct culture that sets it apart from North Jersey. It boasts unique traditions such as the Mummer's Parade on New Year's Day and a strong agricultural sector that includes some of the country's most productive cranberry bogs and blueberry farms (source: NJ Department of Agriculture). Economically, South Jersey has been historically less prosperous than North Jersey due to fewer urban centers and less industrial development (source: Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia).

Politically, there are also stark differences between these two regions. While North Jersey leans more towards liberal politics with its close proximity to New York City, South Jersey tends to be more conservative reflecting its rural character (source: Rutgers University).

The division between North and South in New Jersey is not just about geography; it reflects deep-seated economic disparities, cultural differences, and political divergence. Recognizing these realities through granting statehood would allow both regions to govern according to their unique needs.

We urge lawmakers at both state and federal levels to seriously consider this proposal for the betterment of all residents in both parts of what is currently known as New Jersey. Please sign this petition if you believe in recognizing regional diversity within our states by establishing South Jersy as an independent entity.
