The United Nations define domestic violence or Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) as a pattern of behavior in a relationship to gain or maintain power and control over a partner, by inflicting abuse in various forms such as, harmful physical, sexual, emotional, economic, and/or psychological threats.
According to Generation Hope (GH) based in Washington D.C., 1 in 5 undergraduate college students today is a parent, and yet they're 10 times less likely to graduate. Fewer than 2% of teen mothers who have a baby before age 18 earn a college degree before age 30. I can imagine their hardship and then even more so for those who have been victims of domestic violence or human trafficking.
GH released a report, "Student Parents and Intimate Partner Violence" (Oct. 2023) which provides research on the extent and effects of domestic violence on survivors, student parents, and children. https://www.generationhope.org/student-parents-and-intimate-partner-violence-2023/ Contained therein are alarming stats, for example, "66% of IPV survivors say that the abuse they experienced disrupted their progress toward their educational goals, and 44% of IPV survivors dropped or had to retake one or more classes as a result of the abuse."
We would like to reduce those numbers. It is hard to imagine how much money these survivors have lost just because of having to drop out of college or classes due to IPV and then have to re-enroll and re-take classes. The AMHF Scholarship program can help with that and your signature on our petition is needed. Please help today.
