The Issue

As a resident of Beaverton, OR, I have seen the joy Halloween brings to children year after year. However, this joy is often cut short due to school commitments the next day. This year, Halloween falls on a Tuesday, and our children are forced to end their trick-or-treating early in preparation for school. Meanwhile, numerous days off throughout the academic calendar tack any discernable reason.

As a child, I have seen that Halloween is not just about costumes and candy; it's an opportunity for community bonding and creative expression. It's time we recognize this by giving our children a full opportunity to celebrate without worrying about waking up early for school the next day.

According to data from the National Retail Federation (NRF), more than 172 million Americans celebrated Halloween in 2019. This clearly shows that it's not just an event but an integral part of our culture that deserves recognition.

By making either October 31st or November 1st a day off from school, we can ensure our children get to fully enjoy this festive occasion while also getting adequate rest before returning to their studies.

We ask schools across Beaverton and beyond: Is one more day off too much? Let us prioritize our children’s happiness and well-being by acknowledging their love for Halloween with a deserved break. Sign this petition if you agree that November 1st should be established as a school holiday for Halloween!
