Petition to the Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare

The Union Budget 2026–27 announced the establishment of NIMHANS-2, a new national institute dedicated to mental health and neurosciences in northern India. We request the Government of India to select Jaipur, Rajasthan as its location.

Rajasthan is India's largest state by area, with a population exceeding 80 million. Its vast geography creates serious challenges in accessing specialised mental healthcare, neurology, neurosurgery and emergency neurological treatment, particularly for people living in remote districts.

A NIMHANS in Jaipur could serve not only Rajasthan but also neighbouring states, providing advanced treatment, medical education, research and specialist training.

Crucially, the institution would do more than treat patients in Jaipur. Following the successful model of NIMHANS Bengaluru, it could strengthen mental healthcare across the region through training, district-level partnerships, telemedicine and outreach programmes.

This is not a request for an additional institution beyond what has been announced. It is a request to locate the already-proposed NIMHANS-2 where it can address substantial unmet healthcare needs.

We respectfully urge the Union Government to give Jaipur serious consideration when determining the location of NIMHANS-2.

Petition initiated by Siddharth Goenka, Trustee, Jhunjhunu Dharmada Trust and advocate for stronger public policy in healthcare and education.
