The Issue

What if we dedicated one day each year to creativity, generosity, participation, and community?

We propose establishing National Burning Man Day — a day when people across the United States can bring the spirit and principles of Burning Man into their own communities. You don't have to attend Burning Man to participate.

For decades, the Burning Man community has demonstrated what can happen when people come together to create rather than simply consume; to participate rather than watch; to give without expecting something in return; and to take responsibility for the communities and environments they share. National Burning Man Day would invite people everywhere to put those values into action.

What could you do?

🎨 Create — Make art, music, or something you've never made before.
🎁 Gift — Give something freely, without expecting anything in return.
🤝 Participate — Join a community project instead of remaining on the sidelines.
❤️ Volunteer — Give your time and skills to a person, organization, or cause.
🌱 Leave No Trace — Clean up a park, beach, neighborhood, or natural area and leave it better than you found it.
🏘️ Build Community — Organize a gathering, share a meal, meet your neighbors, or bring people together.
🔥 Practice Immediacy — Put down the phone, be present, and connect with the people around you.

This idea is inspired by Burning Man's Ten Principles, including Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, Radical Self-reliance, Radical Self-expression, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leaving No Trace, Participation, and Immediacy.

National Burning Man Day would not require anyone to attend Burning Man or participate in the festival. It would be about recognizing the positive potential of these principles and encouraging people to practice them wherever they live — in cities, towns, neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and communities across the country.

Imagine millions of people spending one day each year creating something, helping someone, volunteering, giving freely, connecting with their neighbors, making art, caring for the environment, or simply participating more fully in their community.

One day can become a tradition. A tradition can become a culture. And culture can change how we relate to one another.

Our Request

We call for the establishment of a National Burning Man Day in the United States — a day dedicated to creativity, participation, generosity, civic responsibility, community, and human connection. We see this as a movement that can grow from the ground up: individual states can lead the way with their own resolutions, building the momentum for national recognition to follow.

Whether you have attended Burning Man hundreds of times, went once, or have never been at all, you can be part of this idea.

If you believe we could use more creativity, generosity, participation, and community, add your name and help make National Burning Man Day a reality.
