Establish Maurice Calvin Williams Memorial Highway Promote Safe Driving and Save A Life

The Issue

My father, Maurice Calvin Williams, was a pillar of strength and wisdom in our family. His love for us was steadfast, and his support for his grandchildren was unwavering. He was more than just a father; he was my best friend, my spiritual guide, and my confidant. Our bond deepened with each passing year, and he was a constant source of inspiration, always letting me know how proud he was of my endeavors, my family, and my journey as a man. Words cannot fully capture the depth of our loss.

Tragically, my father's life was cut short by a speeding, distracted driver in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The offender only received 6 months and a slap on the wrist - even with his tragic driving record. This senseless accident has left a profound void in our lives, and we believe that honoring his memory with a dedicated highway would not only pay tribute to his legacy but also remind drivers to stay vigilant and safe on the roads.

Maurice Calvin Williams was an active and cherished member of the Ypsilanti community. Graduating from Willow Run High School and a valuable member of the basketball team - he has always stayed trued to his roots. Establishing the Maurice Calvin Williams Memorial Highway would be a fitting commemoration for a man who gave so much to his family and community. His name on a highway would stand as a lasting reminder of the values he embodied – family, community, safety, and support. In the US, around 1,000 to 1,100 bicyclists are killed in motor vehicle crashes annually, with recent data showing 1,155 fatalities in 2023, the highest on record.

We are calling on the local authorities in Ypsilanti and the Michigan Department of Transportation to consider this proposal. By naming a section of highway in his honor, not only do we celebrate his life, but we also urge all drivers to prioritize safety and avoid distractions while driving. This memorial would serve as a symbol of transformation and remembrance, encouraging changes that could prevent tragedies like this in the future. The sign reading: Maurice Calvin Williams  Distracted Driver Awareness  Memorial Highway  To be place by the crosswalk Maurice was tragically taken from us. Exit 185 to Willow Run, where is turns into US-12. There is a light at the crosswalk and it is regularly ran. This sign and more strict monitoring of location will help this from happening again. Please join us in making this tribute possible by signing this petition. Your support can help bring this meaningful initiative to life, keeping the memory of Maurice Calvin Williams alive and ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire and protect our community.
