The Issue

As a resident of Marietta, Georgia, my home is located at an address in the service area and directly impacted by the operations of the Austell Natural Gas System, a municipal utility that doesn't operate like the competitive marketers under Georgia deregulation. Recently, our community received unsettling news: effective February 16, 2026, the price per therm will rise from $1.0980 to $2.1051. This staggering increase of over 91% is a harsh blow to families like mine who rely on this essential service to heat our homes and cook our meals. Such sudden and significant rate hikes highlight the urgent need for legislative intervention.

Across Georgia, utility companies have the ability to impose drastic price increases with little notice and minimal regulation. This lack of oversight leaves many of us vulnerable to financial strain, making it difficult to budget for necessary everyday expenses. While utility companies are essential for our daily lives, it's crucial that we protect consumers from exorbitant and unforeseen hikes that can disrupt our financial stability.

We propose the introduction of legislation that will:
- Restrict the percentage of price increase utility companies can impose within a set time frame.
- Mandate a reasonable notice period before any rate changes take effect, allowing consumers time to adjust their budgets.
- Ensure transparency in how rate increases are determined so that consumers are not blindsided by corporate decisions.

Utilities should serve the communities - not financially burden them. Many families are already facing economic hardships, and unexpected utility costs can exacerbate these challenges. With winter approaching, the impact of such an increase could be devastating for households striving to make ends meet.

It is time for Georgia's lawmakers to devise robust, consumer-first policies that protect residents from unpredictable utility pricing. By signing this petition, we can compel our representatives to safeguard Georgian families and ensure utilities remain affordable and fair. Let's hold utility companies accountable and demand the stability our communities deserve. Sign the petition today to make a change.
