I stand before you today as both a petitioner seeking a change, and as someone directly impacted by the issue at hand: homelessness. As someone who lives through this reality daily, I can attest to the growing crisis in Brattleboro, VT and I need your help. It's estimated that over 2,000 individuals in our community will find themselves without a place to call home in the upcoming months. Without a safe zone to camp, these fellow citizens will be forced to suffer harsh conditions, increasing vulnerability to safety hazards and health issues.

Legal camping grounds provide a temporary solution, mitigating the risks that come from living on the streets. These grounds will offer not only a safe haven for those affected but can also serve as strategic locations for the delivery of much-needed services such as healthcare, food supplies, and aid in finding more permanent housing solutions.

We propose that the city of Brattleboro, VT designates public spaces that can be safely used for camping by the homeless. These spaces could potentially provide immediate relief to thousands who find themselves without shelter in the literal and metaphorical cold.

The dire circumstances faced by the homeless community are admittedly difficult for many to imagine. But by acknowledging the humanity behind the issue and providing safe camping grounds, we can make a real difference in thousands of lives.
