Our beloved family members; our two K9s who were fully trained working dogs; were tragically killed by a state trooper, even after a criminal was subdued. Despite their non-aggressive nature and exceptional obedience, we lost them in a blink of an eye to a senseless act. Today, we urge to create a law holding police officers accountable for the unnecessary killing of dogs. According to DogsBite.org, roughly 9.2% of canine homicides are conducted by police officers. This percentage signifies an alarming trend that needs judicial attention and precise legislative action. It is time to institute a law that makes police officers liable for charges of manslaughter if they kill dogs that do not pose an immediate threat to their safety or the security of those present. We believe in law enforcement, but such fatal instances need to be appropriately dealt with, to deter such heartbreaking situations from happening again. Our goal is to integrate a new program into police academies requiring them to learn, understand and work hands on with dogs to better understand dog behavior patterns.
