The Issue

We, the undersigned residents and supporters of East Chicago, Indiana respectfully request the formal establishment of “Justina Nazario Act of Kindness Day” to honor the life and legacy of a Puerto Rican pioneer and beloved community leader Justina Torres de Nazario.

Justina Nazario moved to East Chicago, Indiana, in 1949 and made history through her service, generosity, and unwavering love for her neighbors. As a restaurateur, she famously kept her doors open during the 1959 steel strike, feeding families regardless of their ability to pay. She believed in community, compassion, faith, and modeled those values every day of her life.

In 1993, she was recognized by Governor Evan Bayh and the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women as one of Indiana’s Puerto Rican Pioneer Women for her profound contributions to the State of Indiana.

We urge Mayor Anthony Copeland of the City of East Chicago to formally recognize her legacy with an annual Justina Nazario Act of Kindness Day, to be observed each year on April 26.

This day will inspire residents to carry out acts of kindness, give back to the community, and uplift others just as Justina did. Let’s make kindness a legacy worth celebrating.
