Establish Freight Train Quiet Zones throughout Rockland

Establish Freight Train Quiet Zones throughout Rockland
The Issue
We hate the deafening noise of freight train horns. We thought we had to live with it - but that is not true. There is a simple fix.
Today, if you live in Clarkstown, Haverstraw, Orangetown, or Stony Point you can hear a train horn as many as 15 times, at all hours - maybe waking you up at night, maybe disrupting you on the phone, maybe breaking your serenity outdoors.
Our quality of life is poorer and our property values lower. The shame of this is that all of this is unnecessary.
There exists a lawful and successful solution to this issue — the creation of Quiet Zones.
In designated Quiet Zones, the racket from approaching trains is replaced with enhanced safety measures at rail crossings. Implementing such zones, as has been successfully done upstate and in New Jersey, requires simply fitting a more efficient safety gate at the rail-crossings.
This prudent compromise between ensuring safety and minimizing noise pollution is a viable way forward for our communities. It’s a small step that promises to restore the peace we've lost, and we plead for its execution.
Let's mute the cacophony, not our pleas. Sign this petition to rally for the conversion of these rail crossings into Quiet Zones in our towns.
